October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. InfoNet data show that in state fiscal year 2024, domestic violence agencies provided over half a million (615,191) direct service hours to 51,456 domestic violence survivors.
Domestic Violence Client Demographics
- Most clients identified as female (83%). Other clients identified as male (16%) and transgender, gender non-conforming, or another gender identity (<1%).
- Over half of clients (57%) identified as people of color.
- Among clients aged 18 or older who disclosed their sexual orientation, 6.8% clients identified as gay/lesbian, bisexual, queer, or other.
- Nearly half of clients (44%) had annual incomes of $12,00 or less.
Direct Services
- Agencies provided 944,763 direct service contacts.
- Domestic violence clients most commonly received civil legal advocacy (46%) and in-person counseling services (41%).
- 9,108 clients received emergency shelter or housing services.
Training and Public Awareness
- Agencies provided 17,920 individuals with professional training.
- Agencies reached 291,277 individuals through public awareness efforts.
Turnaways
- 8,873 individuals, including 3,922 children, were turned away from domestic violence emergency shelters due to lack of bed spaces.
